Objective: To study some strategies to improve our ability to read academic texts and explore the topic of our projects.

Academic Reading  Workshop 1



Reading Strategies:


In order to analyze a text we should take into account the following aspects:

ANALYSIS OF CONTEXT, PURPOSE AND AUDIENCE OF TEXTS:

To recognize the context of a text you should ask questions such as:
Who wrote the text?
When was the text written?
Where was the text written?
Where was the text published?

To recognize the purpose of the text you should consider the following intentions:

Does the text intend to Inform, narrate, recount, describe or illustrate a fact? 

To recognize the audience of a text you should ask the following questions?

According to the level of difficulty of the language used, the topics or ideas complexity, the organization of the text, or the level of formality, is the text written for... (children, adults, students, researchers, etc.)


Project Homework

Look for an academic article in English about the problem you will be addressing with your project proposal.

Nouns often end: -ment, -ion, -ness, -ity.

B.  Analysis of terminology and parts of speech:

Build a glossary with unknown words from the text. Write the definition of the word in English and the part of speech of it. You should use a monolingual dictionary to define the words:http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

 C. Graphic Organizers: 

They organize, classify and summarize the information of the text using an appropriate graphic organizer. Remember that the purpose of a graphic organizer is to represent graphically the main themes or ideas of a text and the logical relations existing among them.

  1. The video was about ocean pollution and a way to revert it. The problem described was the huge amounts of plastic which end up in the ocean and are dangerous for wildlife as well as for people. He noticed that there were more bags than fish while diving in Greece and he wondered if there would be a way to clean up the water instead of just stop polluting it. He wants to build a giant barrier around the big trash conglomerations created by ocean currents, therefore creating a bottleneck to gather all garbage in one place to be collected by huge platform which will be emptied every six weeks.

  2. The video was about the ocean pollution and a possible solution.
    The problem is the amount of plastic in the ocean.
    He love diving and one day saw more plastic bags that fish.
    He wants to build a net and take advantage of ocean currents to catch the plastic.

The problem described in the video is the quantity of waste plastics that are deposit in the ocean; this plastic is tossed for humans from rivers that flow into in the ocean or litter that is directly thrown to the ocean, this waste are causing a great damage environmental since the intoxication of animals, water and indirectly of humans. The solution for this problem appear the young from 17 years old share his solution to the problem, the as consist in the implementation of a system of massive recollection of waste plastic, that him function is to rotate the water and rampart stay the litter, later a boat collect this waste, in this way was eliminated the millions of tons of waste plastic.

  5. hey what happened with my comment? i was sure that i post it, well im going to rewrite it.
    Rhe video is about a project by a young men that wants to clean te seas.
    The main problem explained in the video is the oceans pollution by the plastics
    He realized that the oceans pollution is a several problem when he was diving so he have the idea to filter the ocean with barriers.
